What’s the difference between panelized stone and loose stone?

Panelized natural stone veneer is preassembled stone panels or sheets that are made up of small natural stone pieces that are adhered together to form a solid panel. These panels are typically assembled in a controlled environment using a jig or machinery to ensure consistent sizing and shape.

Loose stone veneer are individual, uncut, or minimally processed thin natural stones. These stones are typically irregularly shaped and vary in size, texture, and color and when installed, typically result in a more traditional old world masonry look.

What’s the difference between flats and corners?

In stone veneer installations, flat pieces and corner pieces serve different purposes and are designed specifically for their respective areas. Here is the difference between the two:

 Flat Pieces:

Flat pieces of stone veneer are used to cover the majority of the flat, vertical wall surfaces. The purpose of flat pieces is to provide coverage and create the look of a traditional stone surface. Flat pieces are typically used for most of the installation, covering the larger, uninterrupted sections of the wall surface.

Corner Pieces:

Corner pieces, also known as corner units, are specifically designed to cover the corners or edges of a wall or surface. These pieces are shaped to fit the angled intersection where two walls meet or where a wall meets an external corner.  The purpose of corner pieces is to provide a finished and visually pleasing transition between the vertical surfaces. They help create a defined edge, add depth, and dimension to the veneer, and ensure a seamless appearance at the corners.

Corner pieces are designed in a variety of formats including: 90 degree “L” shape format, double ended Z format, 2-piece Z format, finger joint format or natural chiseled format.

How do I know how much stone I need for my project? Do I need flats and corners?

To determine the amount of stone veneer you will need for your project and to determine the quantity of flat pieces and corner pieces required, you can follow these steps:

Measure the surface area - Measure the total surface area that you plan to cover with stone veneer. This includes both the flat sections and the corner sections of the wall or surface. Measure the length and height of each section in linear feet.

Calculate how many square feet of flats are required - Calculate the square footage of flats required by:

  1. Multiply the lineal foot length x the lineal foot width of all surfaces you wish to cover.
  2. Do the same calculation for all door/window openings or areas you do not wish to cover in stone.
  3. Measure the lineal footage of all corners you will cover in stone and multiply by .75.
  4. Reduce the first number by the second and third numbers

This will tell you how many square feet of Flats you require to complete your project

Total square footage = Total surface area – surface area of openings – (lineal feet of corners x .75)

Calculate how many linear feet of corners are required - Corner pieces are generally sold in linear feet rather than individual pieces. Measure the linear length of the corners that require coverage with corner pieces.

Total lineal footage = Add together the lineal footage of all corners to be covered

Consider extra material for waste and cuts - It is advisable to account for waste and the need for additional cuts for both flats and corners. Stone veneer may require trimming or adjustments during installation. Adding an extra 10-15% to the total quantity can help accommodate waste and provide flexibility.

What happens if any product arrives broken?

Given the nature of the panel products and challenges associated with shipping stone, there may be some broken panels inside the cartons. The industry standard for waste factor is between 10% to 15%.  However, as almost all projects require some panels to be cut to fit, most broken panels can be used somewhere on your project. It is best to set them aside and install them in areas of your project requiring smaller pieces.

What if the product I ordered doesn’t look the same as the images on your website?

Natural stone products are products of nature and variations in color, pattern, texture, and veining are inherent characteristics of these materials. As a natural stone, the color may change slightly over time depending on where the raw materials are being obtained from in the quarry at the time of extraction.

The images provided are intended to represent the overall characteristics of the stone; however, they may not fully capture the exact color, pattern, or veining of the specific stone product you will receive.  Additionally, the appearance of natural stone can be influenced by lighting conditions, surface finishes, and other environmental factors. We recommend viewing physical samples to assess the stone's color and characteristics before making a final selection.

We strive to provide accurate representations of our stone products, but we cannot guarantee that the stone you receive will be an exact match to the samples or images. We encourage customers to embrace the natural variations and uniqueness of each stone, as they contribute to the beauty and charm of natural stone installations.
